Improving habitat for threatened birds, Kilcunda-Powlett River

In May 2025, Gippsland Threatened Species Action Group (GTSAG) received a Victorian Government Coastcare Grant to improve habitat for threatened birds at Kilcunda-Powlett River.

The project involves volunteers, who will focus on hand pulling Sea Spurge (Euphorbia paralias) - a small, upright, multi-stemmed perennial shrub that infests coastal dunes. Weeding will be carried out along the coast between Kilcunda and Mouth of the Powlett River at one or two potential Hooded Plover nesting sites.

African Boxthorn control for threatened birds such as the Blue-winged Parrot will be carried out in Coast Banksia Woodland in the more inaccessible areas south of Powlett Swamp and to the east of the Kilcunda cemetery in the Yallock-Bulluk Marine & Coastal Park.

An interpretative sign highlighting the geomorphological and biodiversity significance of the area will also be produced.
