Protecting and enhancing habitat for the endangered Swamp Skink

Coastal areas under threat

The endangered Swamp Skink (Lissolepis coventryi) is an attractive medium sized skink found mainly in the coastal region of South-Eastern Australia.

Following the discovery of a population of Swam Skinks at Inverloch, experts determined that its habitat was being diminished by the recent housing development of Broadbeach Estate. A boardwalk has been constructed to provide protection.

This GTSAG project, supported by Coastcare, will focus on weed control and supplementary planting.

A community awareness raising program is also underway. It includes interpretative signage and a pamphlet for local residents and visitors on the importance of protecting and retaining habitat in this fragile coastal area. A local herpetologist will carry out an ongoing volunteer monitoring program of population numbers.
